I'm often asked whether colour-protecting haircare products are worth investing in. From my perspective, when we spend so much time, effort and money in getting our hair to that perfect shade, it makes sense to ensure that we get as long as possible out of it.

"There's no point in your colourist spending hours getting your hair looking glossy and healthy for you to go home and wash it all out," says Dean Monks, a senior stylist at The Hive Salon (thehivesalon.ie) and semi-finalist in this year's Wella Trend Vision Colour Artist of the Year Award. "Some shampoos and conditioners are filled with sulphates and silicones, which aren't good for your colour," he continues. "During the summer months, when we all tend to spend more time outside, a combination of the wind and sun will also fade out your colour. Using your professional products will reduce this."

Dean recommends the System Professional range, but there are lots of colour protection products available at varying price points. Below, I've listed some great options that will keep your colour looking vibrant and your hair healthy for as long as possible. I've divided the products into different hair colours, but you can also use general products. Just look for the terms "colour protect", "colour extend" or "colour safe" on the packaging.

It leaves coloured hair feeling nourished and protected, without weighing it down. If you don't have time to do a mask, this little gem is for you, as there's no leave-in time required. Pureology

My personal favourite, I've been using this range for years and it never lets me down. Pureology's Colour Care Hydrate Shampoo, €21.40, and Conditioner, €24.90, cleanse the hair with zero stripping of colour. The organic, nourishing formula will hydrate dry, damaged, colour-treated hair and leave it softer and shinier. From Peter Mark.

Redken

Blonde dye can often cause brittle, damaged, weak hair. Redken's Color Extend Blondage Shampoo, from €18.90, has been developed with a triple acid protein complex to combat this. This purple shampoo cleanses hair whilst nourishing and strengthening it to help protect from breakage. Be sure to wear gloves to keep your hands free of the purple colour when using this. Kiehl's

Colouring hair definitely dries it out, but using conditioners can also cause colour to fade. Kiehl's Sunflower Color Preserving Deep Recovery Pak, €32, is a silicone- and paraben-free product infused with sunflower oils, apricot, vitamin B3, B5 and B6, and a UV-protective filter to keep blondes looking vibrant all summer; from Arnotts and department stores nationwide. Kevin.Murphy Blonde Angel Conditioner, €24, is another brilliant natural option; see kevinmurphystore.ie

Davines

The Davines Alchemic System was created exclusively for coloured hair. Not only does Davines Alchemic Shampoo for Natural & Coloured Hair (Red), €19, retain existing colour, it also infuses hair with a deeper hue, while still protecting it. Also comes in copper, warm chocolate, silver, deep chocolate and blonde. From mack.ie

Wella

To keep colour-treated hair from looking thirsty, frizzy and unhealthy, use a rich, colour-preserving treatment mask once a week. The Wella Brilliance Treatment for Colour Treated Hair, €24.50, helps restore hair's vibrancy and sheen. This isn't too gloopy or heavy so is perfect for fine-to-normal-textured hair. From salons nationwide.

Klorane

Those with silver or shimmering grey hair can find it tricky to maintain a clean, bright colour. Klorane Shampoo with Centaury, €11.50, combats brassiness and is a lovely natural alternative if you don't fancy using traditional synthetic purple shampoos. Centaury, a blue flowering plant harvested in France, naturally enhances the radiance of white, grey, silver and platinum blonde hair. From pharmacies nationwide.

Phyto Phytargent

If you don't colour your hair (a trend that's growing massively) and are going naturally grey, you still want your hair to look more silver fox than the dull yellow that comes from natural oxidation. A brightening shampoo specifically for white/grey/platinum hair is your best bet here. Phyto Phytargent Brightening Shampoo for Grey/White, €16, is a gentle cleanser that detangles while it intensely hydrates and softens the hair fibre, from pharmacies nationwide. Schwarzkopf Live Stay Bright Booster Silver Shampoo, €4.70, is another good option, from Boots stores.

White and grey hair is naturally dry, so it's vital to condition and nourish it after each wash. Garnier Ultimate Blends Hair Food Banana, €8.99, is made from 98pc natural ingredients and is a treat for thirsty mature hair. Use as a conditioner or mask. You only need a tiny amount so this tub will last you ages! From pharmacies.
