WHEN it comes to styling hair, she is a cut above the rest.

Leona Collins was last night named as the 2012 Hairdresser of the Year at the annual Irish Hairdressing Championships at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin.

Ms Collins, who works at David Murray Hair and Beauty in Drogheda, Co Louth, beat 300 hairdressers to claim the title.

The nationwide prestigious awards are the benchmark of talent in the hairdressing industry.

The championships were a carnival of colourful fashion and spectacular hair styles.

The competition has been going for almost 40 years with the Irish Hairdressers' Federation hosting the first event in 1974.

"The championships are an opportunity for our top professionals to show off their ability, originality and flair and be recognised alongside some of Ireland's most talented industry names," said Greg Clarke, president of the federation.

"These awards are the benchmark for Irish hairdressing standards and there are some amazingly inventive and eye-catching styles here today."
