Whether she's using oversized heels and fashion overkill or more subtle girl next door styling Black Eyed Peas belle Fergie always seems to wow the crowds. Recently seen stepping out in a trademark feathered mini dress by Falguni & Shane, Fergie opted for demure make-up as the perfect foil to a larger than life gown.

It might have been tempting for someone so used to being over the top to go completely over the top. As it was, the natural look turned out to be the perfect canvas for a beautiful dress at the American Music Awards.

Getting the look right is a lot harder than it seems. As it is, a natural base, perfect skin and bright eyes compliment her naturally plump pout. Simply, the flaws are minimised and the look really seems to highlight Fergie's best bits.

For a base begin by prepping skin with a primer like Benefits Dr Feelgood before applying a foundation like Mac's Studiofix Fluid. A foundation brush will give a smooth finish and when it comes to hiding imperfections a touch of Make Up Stores Cover All Mix is especially good for the eyes, nose and cupids bow. When it comes to the shine a powder like Make Up Forevers high definition Microfinish Powder will also go a long way to help keep the base in place.

Apart from a few sweeps of mascara, Fergie went for all out natural eyes. For a copycat natural finish, take Trish McEvoys Eye Base Essentials in Bare as a primer and layer the eye socket with a nude shadow like MAC's Shroom. To finish eyes, a few ( and we do mean a few ) sweeps of lengthening mascara will help the look along.

Fergies naturally full lips are slightly lighter then her natural colour. For an even finish try lining lips using a nude palette like Bobbi Brown's Essentials Lip Liner in Blush, and once the shape is set, gently apply a light creamy lipstick like Rimmel's Rose Sorbet with a brush.

Sharing the red carpet with fellow band member Will I Am isn't exactly for the faint hearted. Although the make-up may be calm, the tousled main is much more in keeping with those feathered shoulder pads so if you are going to team a big dress with simple make-up, try big barrel curls for a similar counterpoint. Fergie has been around for a long time now, and whilst she doesn't always get it quite right, she does at the very least get the party started - we love this look !
