Edel Coffey: 'Tis the season to glimmer

It’s that time of year again. Pale skin and unwaxed legs can languish beneath the safety of winter clothes.

It’s easy to be lulled into a false sense of security but, before you know it, your neglected body will have nowhere to hide as the Christmas festivities arrive. Here are some of the best products to get your body ready to party.

WAX Start by getting the hair situation under control. Try Brazilia’s new Olive Oil wax, the latest from Australian wax specialists Lycon (their wax sticks to the hair and not the skin). The vitamin E in olive oil acts as an antioxidant and helps heal the skin. €40 for a full-leg wax. PRO: Leaves skin smooth. CON: Having hair ripped out is painful. Tel: 01-675 0000;

EXFOLIATE Leave your skin at least 24 hours after a wax as the skin will be sensitised. Before tanning, make sure you exfoliate. If you can incorporate this into your daily routine all the better — I combine an exfoliator with my shower gel to save time. Try Burt’s Bees Peach and Willowbark Scrub (€12.50) for a stronger scrub, Soap & Glory’s The Greatest Scrub Of All for a softer face polish, or Rituals’ Hammam Hot Scrub (€14.90) for a luxurious experience.

MOISTURISE With your skin now buffed, make sure it’s in supple condition before applying fake tan. There’s nothing worse than how tan sits on dry skin. The spa brand Bliss (Harvey Nichols; Brown Thomas) has a new Lemon and Sage Body Butter (€25), which is perfect for those in a hurry as it offers maximum moisture but doesn’t linger on your skin, so you don’t have to wait for it to sink in before you get dressed. It’s got a lovely fresh lemony scent, too. One of my favourite beauty brands, available from health food stores, is Trilogy — their Nourishing Body Lotion (€19.95) will last you till spring. If you don’t want to shell out, I find Ingredients body butters (€8; or two for €10) from Marks & Spencer do the job just as well.

TAN Wow Brown tanning has ‘tanologists’ all over the country. This company was set up by two Irish girls who developed their own product specifically for Irish skin. Keep your body moisturised and your tan will fade well. (€35 for a spray tan)

FINISH Use a luxurious body oil such as Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle spray oil (€45) to make your body shimmer subtly. If you prefer a more full-on party finish, try the Body Shop’s new Sparkler in Boudoir Pink (€19.95), a limited-edition atomiser filled with iridescent sparkle dust.
