The 2fm presenter Louise McSharry has opened up about her lifelong struggle with her weight and how she is now taking matters into her own hands.

Louise admitted she has always been overweight.

“I’m someone who has never been thin,” she said. “I’ve lost weight, gained, lost, gained...I’ve always been a size 16 or over and at my biggest I was probably a size 22.”

Embarrassed at her level of unfitness, and feeling “like crap” she started to think seriously about her future.

“About 12 weeks ago I decided to make a change, and for once it wasn't about the physical appearance,” she told listeners today.

“I don’t want to be sitting on the sidelines watching my future husband playing with our kids because I am not fit enough.”

Louise enlisted the help of a personal trainer, John, who himself had lost eight stone.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do it on my own, I prioritised the money and made the investment in my future.”

Seeing John three times a week, Louise is “down a few stone and feels great”:

“Do I like it? No! I’m happy leaving the gym, not because of the endorphins, but because the exercise is over!”

“It is daunting. I find it hard to get my head around the fact that I have to keep exercise up forever to keep fit,” she lamented.

“But starting is the hardest bit. Day one Louise would not believe that she could do what I can do in the gym now,” she said triumphantly.

Louise urged people who are feeling unhappy about their weight and want to make a lifestyle change to tweet her as though she is no expert, she is happy to give tips and advice,

“If you’re someone who is having those moments- if you’re embarrassed, or you want to make a change- you can.. and you will see an improvement in yourself immediately.”
