Expensive lotions and potions aside, here are three multi-tasking staples that you should have in your beauty arsenal.

As the Irish climate means spending most of the year bundled up in layers of clothes, do you pay sufficient attention to the areas of your body that are mostly concealed?

Incorporating the following three things into your beauty routine - even once a week - will pay off dividends as you boost your circulation and improve skin tone.

1. Skipping Rope, Penneys

The idea of jumping over a rope might conjure images of your primary school days, but did you know skipping is one of the most effective cardiovascular exercises out there? (Skipping for thirty minutes a day can burn approximately 350 calories.)

Regular skipping improves the muscle tone in the legs, lower body, shoulders and arms. As the core is engaged too, you will also strengthen your abdominal muscles.

As part of their new fitness collection, high street hero Penneys have both skipping ropes (above) and speed ropes available for less than a cup of takeaway coffee.

Make a playlist of upbeat songs and start skipping to the up-tempo beats - you won’t notice 30 minutes go by and you’ll have completed a whole body workout in the comfort of your home.

2. Epsom Salts, chemists nationwide

If you want to simultaneously relax and detox but don't want to shell out for a spa treatment, pick up a pot of Epsom salts from your local pharmacy.

The mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate is a natural remedy, which helps flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells. For a detoxifying bath, add two cups of the salts to a warm bath and soak for 10 minutes.

Among other benefits, an Epsom salt bath will help reduce water retention, bloating, de-puff skin and thoroughly cleanse the pores.

Aesthetics aside, Epsom salts offer many more benefits including stress relief and pain relief (ideal after a tough workout.)

3. Body Brush, Penneys/beauty stores nationwide

It’s estimated that between 80-90% of women suffer from dreaded cellulite, be it genetic or as a result of a sedentary lifestyle.

Most established beauty brands offer some form of ‘miracle’ cream that claims to diminish the appearance of orange-peel skin, but in my opinion, one of the most effective ways to combat the problem is with regular dry body brushing.

Dry body brushing helps shed dead skin cells, which results in smoother and brighter skin while also helping with muscle tone.

This method also helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores and encourages new cell renewal.

For effective results, brush dry skin before bathing in a gentle circular, upward motions, working from the ankle up.

Remember, walking more and drinking water are two of the most effective ways to tackle 'cottage cheese thighs' and like the supposed best things in life, they are free.
