Each week we at Independent Woman investigate what's new and cutting edge in the battle to remain young and beautiful. This week, in a desperate bid to shed those dead layers of summer skin and perk things up before winter approaches, we sampled the Dual Effect Gamma Facial from Dublin's In-Vogue salon.

What is it?

A must for anyone looking for help with a dry, dehydrated complexion.

Dead skin is stripped away, blocked pores are cleared, age spots are evened out and skin is hydrated using a combination of gels, serums and masks. Ladies looking for a little relaxation are also catered for with plenty of head, face and shoulder massage during the treatment.

The core of the treatment relies upon microdermabrasion to remove the dead skin layers

What's the process?

Dead skin build up is stripped away, acne scars are reduced and lines and wrinkles are eased using microdermabrasion. Serums are then applied to skin and a cool mist of fine water particles are sprayed onto skin which helps with dermal penetration. Face, neck and decollete are than treated to a relaxing massage to boost circulation and increase collagen production before a hydrating jelly mask is laid onto the face and eyes. After twenty minutes the treatment ends with a snooze inducing head massage.

How does it work?

The microdermabrasion is the real secret here. By removing the layers of dead skin, the hydrating ingredients in the products are free to filter down to the deepest dermal layers. The mini water particles in the mist infuse even the most dehydrated of skin types leaving skin soft, bouncy and bright. The serum and the mask help skin to lock in moisture.

Any celebrity fans?

Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow are said to use the treatment and the ever handsome Jude Law is also rumoured to be a fan .

What are the benefits?

The treatment stimulates fresh cell production deep within skin and evens out skin texture on the surface. Wrinkles and crows feet are eased, those dry bits are erased and dull dehydrated skin is plumped up to leave skin softer and smoother.

How long does it take?

A while but worth the wait. Probably best give yourself plenty of time for this one - I was in the hot seat for almost two hours.

An d the best bit?

My eczema disappeared. Having gone in with a flare up around my nose and mouth, the microdermabrasion worked it all away leaving my skin soft and even. Quite a result!

Any downsides?

There is a certain amount of downtime required. After the treatment my face was quite red for the rest of the day. Using make-up is not recommended for six hours following treatment so if you're having it done before an evening out, make sure you give yourself plenty of time.

I'm in .... where to next ?
