Beauty: Triona McCarthy's... Bag of tricks
Our beauty buff reveals her top tips and has the low-down on the latest tanning sensation, the newest salon to the stars, and designer make-up musthaves
I've always loved tips and tricks, ever since I was a young girl flicking through my mum's Woman's Way magazine. They had a 'Tips' section. I always read it first to find new ways of doing things.
Nowadays, my Triona's Tricks section on this page is pretty popular - lots of peeps tell me they've cut out a trick and tried it, or a tip has transformed the way they do something.
So, it got me to thinking, if I had to choose only two products for tips and tricks, I'd go with:
1 Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream, €31, as I use it on my lips as a lip gloss; on my brows to keep them smooth and in place; as a face highlighter; to add shine to eyelids and even on my legs for a healthy-looking sheen.
Skincare-wise, its legendary soothing and moisturising benefits help protect skin from drying wind, central heating and air-conditioning, while alleviating sunburn or windburn, chapping or peeling. I also put it on my hair to add a little sheen. It also softens rough, dry cuticles and rough heels and soles.
When I get new shoes, I use it on the inside of them to soften the leather so I can 'break them in' more easily. My boyf uses it to reduce the look of redness after shaving and even Mini and Maxi's botties get the Arden treatment.
2 Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo, €3.99, is my other absolute must have. Dry shampoo doesn't just extend a blow dry, it does a whole lot of other essential stuff - like if you're a blondie, the white powder helps cover dark roots. And if you're a curly Sue, it stops curls clumping together as it makes hair matt, covering hair's natural oils, so curls don't knit together.
Dry shampoo keeps fringes from sticking to foreheads if you spray it underneath, while backcombed bouffants stay in place with a quick spray. And, bobby pins stay in place if you spray them with dry shampoo to give them some grip.

For designer digits like Holly Carpenter's, check out 53 Main Street - Dundrum's newest concept salon where a trio of talented beauty experts - nail tech Michele Burke, MUA Michelle Montgomery, and waxer Kim Ryan - have teamed up to create this 'one-stop shop' for nails, waxing, spray tanning and make-up, split into three dedicated beauty destinations.
There once was a fella called Tom Ford,
Whose make-up I completely adored,
But in order to buy,
All his things that I spy,
The rent would have to be ignored!
Yes, Mr Ford has released yet another highly covetable summer collection. It includes this Tom Ford Cream and Powder Eye Color, €55 - an eye shadow duo containing a cream and a shadow in a little pot with a compact mirror.
It's just a lil' bit spendy, but oh so fabulous!
This is an exquisite eyeshadow for even the least proficient applier of make-up!
I simply smooth on the cream first with my finger, blending it really well. This looks great on its own, but for some seriously professionally applied-looking glamour, pop the powder shadow over it and you get this amazing metallic look.
There are four different colour combos in this collection but the pewter/teal in Midnight Sea, is my favourite for sexy summer eyes to mesmerise!
Triona's most wanted
Somebody asked me recently what scent was I wearing and I had to stop and think.
I often forget to put on any in my rush to get out the door!
I generally smell of a mixture of baby sick and breast milk these days. Baby Seren should have been called Wendy as she's a very windy baby and loves to spew.
When I leave the house now, I'm so busy checking if I have any white mush on my shoulders or my shoes, that I sometimes forget to remember to pop on perfume.
Anyhoo, it turns out it was the fab fragrance from Nuxe Prodigieux Shower Oil, €12, my new favourite shower buddy that was wafting round me.
It leaves a lovely light fragrance, while my skin feels as smooth as silk with the teeniest hint of shimmer. Because, remember girls, sometimes you've got to get clean to get dirty! I'm totally winking at you all right now as I write that.
Ladies AND Gentlemen!
Let me introduce you to the new Overnight Ageless Tanning Balm by He-Shi, €28, for all your tanning and anti-ageing needs.
Use this at night - the clue is in the name. Instead of your regular moisturiser, apply with a mitt, making sure to blend well around the hairline and, tah dah, next morning you'll wake with a lovely light, sun-kissed glow to your skin.
The skin-friendly formula contains pure plant-derived anti-ageing ingredients with powerful antioxidant and rejuvenating properties to hydrate and firm skin.
TOP TIP: Two layers at night creates a more golden-y brown colour.
