Beauty: Age against the machine
Age before beauty? Not any more, according to Triona McCarthy who brings us all the latest beauty news, top tips and product picks
Oul' wans are the new black!
I've been banging on about this, and now it seems there's an old-lady revolution, with women in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and - thanks to Celine's new ads with Joan Didion - 80s, having a major moment.
Nars is using Charlotte Rampling, 68, while Jessica Lange, 64, is Marc Jacobs's beauty babe. Kudos, too, to L'Oreal who has Jane Fonda, 76, Helen Mirren, 69, and Diane Keaton, 68, as brand ambassadors.
As a beauty writer, I was sick of this notion that women become invisible at 40. Feck off! It's not about trying to turn back time: ageing with style and elegance is about knowing which products will keep you looking and feeling your best. Skin: Chanel's Lift Lumiere Firming and Smoothing Fluid Makeup SPF 15, €47, gives lovely, natural coverage, with a hint of youthful dewiness. If you need powder, use it sparingly and build it up slowly.
Cheeks: Our cheeks drop as we get older, so a bit of blush instantly makes the face look more youthful. I love Nars Blush in Orgasm, €30. Pop it on the apples of your cheeks and brush up your cheekbone toward your hairline in a C shape.
Lips: Texture is important when it comes to lip products, as our lips get drier and thinner as we get older. So say no to matte lipsticks and yes to something like YSL Volupte Tint-in-Oil, right, €27, which moisturises and glistens gorgeously. Lip colour needn't be dull; try a bright orange or a pink - just as long as the rest of your make-up is quite natural.
Eyes: Avoid shimmer eye shadows, as these only gather in the lines around the eyes. Use BadGal Plum Mascara by Benefit, €23.
Brows: Eyebrows get thin and lighten with age. To restore definition and structure, use Lancome's Le Sourcil Pro Brow Pencil & Highlighter, left, €21.50.
Aaarrgghh! My ponytail's shrinking, my parting's getting wider and there's definitely more hair in the plughole when I shower!
It's just the joys of post-pregnancy hair loss. If you suffer from thinning hair like me at the mo, one of my top tips is to brush your hair before you shower. Dry hair is stronger than wet hair, so detangling before you shower will protect more strands.
Maxim, my one-year-old, is sooo advanced for his age, he's got the Terrible Twos already! I'm not even joking - he's a handful and into everything. If I turn my back for a second, he's writing on the walls, climbing into the oven or fiddling with all the dials on the washing machine.
I can't leave anything precious out as he'll be all over it, like my new favourite fragrance: Armani Prive Pivoine Suzhou, €120, available exclusively at Brown Thomas Dublin and Cork.
Pivoine Suzhou is the latest edition to the Les Eaux collection, and Maxi managed to douse himself AND the sofa in it recently. I nearly had a fit, but now, as I sit here on the sofa typing away, I actually enjoy the aroma around me!
Inspired by the beautiful gardens of Asia, this luxurious scent is a celebration of China's most beloved flower - the peony.
The symbol of the ancient Chinese empire, the peony represents happiness, grace and prosperity, and that's exactly what I'm channelling as I, em, sit on it!
Stephanie Seymour, has always been my favourite supermodel.
The 46-year-old mother of three is a big fan of facials, so I bet she'd love the 'Super Facialists', Emily and Elaine Byrne from Rejuvenate Advanced Skin Clinic, see rejuvenateskinclinic.ie.
These sisters are pretty special at what they do! Since opening 19 years ago, they have mastered the art of beautiful skin through their understanding of treatments and nutrition. And they have healing hands too. They assess your skin, and then do a treatment based on that.
Only five minutes from Naas and Newbridge, getting there is easy; there's ample parking, and the location is discreet - I'm not a fan of the greasy-hair look after a facial and then bumping into people!
You can tell the sex of an ant by dropping it into a jug of water. If it sinks: girl ant. If it floats: boy ant. Hahaha!
I'm in a buoyant mood right now because I love me a good ol' GWP - that's gift with purchase.
Arnotts has a great one on right now, until March 1, with Clarins, where you tailor the gift to suit you, so you'll receive a choice of three super-size beauty essentials from a fabulous range of 10, such as my absolute favourite Hand and Nail Treatment Cream, right.
The other choices include Water Comfort One Step Cleanser; Instant Eye Make-Up Remover; Hydra Quench Cream Mask; Multi-Active Day Cream; Body Treatment Oil; Extra-Firming Day Cream; Moisture-Rich Body Lotion With Shea Butter; Moisturising Body Lotion, Vital Light Day Illuminating Anti-Ageing Cream.
So it's worth €70, with the purchase of two or more recommended products, one to be a moisturiser. Also, with any third purchase, you can take home three must-have make-up products.
Clarins at Arnotts also has a postage service for regional customers, covering the whole country. Just call the counter at extension 237 to arrange delivery.
After weeks of little sleep and then going back on the telly, I needed nothing short of a miracle eye product to make me look like I was actually alive!
Thank the beauty gods for Creme de la Mer's new Illuminating Eye Gel, left, €125. It contains the famous Miracle Broth and it tackles dehydration, which causes lines, along with some amazing optical effects that brighten the shadows under the eyes.
Normally, we're told not to use eye products all over the eye, but this is so gentle it can be used over the eye contour, and actually makes a great eye shadow primer as well. It sinks right in, cools, and makes my skin feel soft and alive!
Top tip: Use it on the lip area which is also prone to fine lines.
