Aidan Turner has finally opened up on his relationship with Sarah Greene.

The pair met at the Gaiety School of Acting and have been together for 10 years but have always remained tight-lipped about their relationship.

They spent the first two years of their relationship apart as Aidan (30) was based in New Zealand filming The Hobbit and Sarah was making a name for herself on the theatre scene in Ireland.

She has since landed a Tony nomination for her turn in The Cripple of Inishmaan as well as roles in Vikings and Penny Dreadful.

"It was tough. But we knew straight away that we were going to make it work," Aidan says of their relationship.

"And it was always worth it. That was a question we asked each other: Is it worth it all the time? And it always was, and it still very much is. If we got through that, we can get through anything."

Aidan admits he had never set foot on stage until he signed up to a course at the Gaiety School of Acting.

"My dad's an electrician, he's a tradesman. My mom is an accountant, very sort of humble working-class beginnings," he told The News Tribune.

"I just knew more so what I didn't want to do. Getting a trade just didn't interest me, going to third-level university didn't interest me.

"I think I wanted to involve myself some way in the arts, but I didn't know what I wanted to do. Acting just seemed to happen.

"I'd never been to a theatre in my life before I went to theatre school, I'd never seen a play," he continued.

"You have one of those revelations or epiphanies or whatever you call it; I just knew this is it.

"It was terrifying getting up in front of a class full of people I'd never met before.

"And just exhilarating because you're right on the edge all the time, improvising or learning dialogue, and finding out about how you make that character work.

"I just found it so interesting. There was so much in it."
