Pitch Perfect: Can your business idea win you a dream office?

The path of the career woman is not always paved with gold – or indeed, paved at all. It’s more than 40 years since the term ‘glass ceiling’ was first coined, and sadly, it’s still as relevant as ever before.

As well as tackling spreadsheets and deadlines on a daily basis, there is a sense that women also need to ‘prove themselves’ while faced with the pressure of ‘having it all’ by juggling motherhood and career goals.

Yes, work for women is tough. But the good news is women are tough, too. Movements like #girlssupportgirls are helping to foster a sisterhood of super-ambitious and inclusive women. Now Image magazine and Samsung want to further empower female entrepreneurs with their exciting new competition.

The competition

Technology powerhouse Samsung is teaming up with the thinking woman’s title, Image, to run a Dragon’s Den-style competition for female entrepreneurs. The contest is open to those who have established a start-up company since January 1st, 2016 and driven their idea from bare-bones concept to relative success. Applicants will be required to fill out a questionnaire on image.ie outlining the specifics of their business, achievements, challenges and commercial expectations.

This is a contest that aims to empower women and showcase a new wave of Irish talent with a world-class judging panel including Jo Malone MBE, Bobby Kerr, broadcaster and founder of Insomnia Coffee and Clodagh Edwards, CEO of IMAGE Publications. They will be joined by Samsung’s head of marketing, Linda Nolan, and Conor Pierce, Vice President for mobile division of Samsung in the UK and Ireland.

The judging panel will be looking for ‘innovation, passion, bravery, resourcefulness and risk-taking’ in entries. The deadline for applications is Monday July 9th.  A selected shortlist will then be invited to make a pitch to grow their business at a special event in the Sugar Club in Dublin on Wednesday July 25th.

Now, about that most important detail …the prize! The winning business owner will have their office kitted out with up to €100k worth of prizes. Think monitors, mobile devices, a digital flip chart – the works. It’s the kind of techy office suite you’ve always dreamed of. If that wasn’t enough, the winner will also receive a multi-platform media package from Image to promote their business. Plus, renowned digital and social agency Teneo PSG will host a masterclass to teach the winner the basics of digital marketing. This is a competition you don’t want to miss. If you’re a savvy, self-starter woman with a business on the rise – or know someone who is – apply today.

Samsung has always been a strong supporter of female innovators in Ireland. With a suite of products that enable fast, efficient, on-the-go work, it is the tech brand of choice for many high-powered women. Women like Sonia Deasy of Pestle & Mortar, Ruth Monahan of Appassionata, Jenny Taaffe of iZest and Roisín Lafferty of Kingston Lafferty Design all proudly use Samsung to facilitate fast wireless charging, handset to desktop connectivity and camera-quality images throughout their working day. For Samsung, the launch of this competition is like giving back to its already loyal female customer base.

Since its launch in 1975, Image magazine has proudly retained the mantle of ‘Ireland’s best-read glossy’. It is a place where women can pore over pages of fashion, day-dream about exotic travel locations and delve into the minds of the movers and shakers of the moment. Not one to shy away from big issues, the pages of Image are as much about substance as form. The title’s annual Image Businesswoman of the Year Awards celebrates powerful women making their way in Irish business, and so supporting another competition to further raise women’s profile was a no-brainer for Image magazine.
