Irish people fly more than they think

How many flights do you take each year?

Figures released by Aer Lingus show that Irish people fly on average 6.79 times a year, with a total of 1,699,000 overseas flights from the Republic of Ireland in the last quarter of 2016, October to December.

As many as 50% of Aer Lingus passengers take between 1 and 4 flights per year with 34% on 5-10 journeys and 6% earning their wings with a whopping 20 plus flights per year. While air traffic continues to grow strongly around the EU, it remains to be seen what effect, if any, Brexit will have on air traffic in Ireland.

It may however affect London-Heathrow and Gatwick, potentially knocking them off the top two spots as the number one and two destination for Aer Lingus flyers.

Other continental destinations to rank highly were Malaga at number three, Amsterdam and Faro at five and six respectively and Tenerife in ninth. John F Kennedy Airport in New York was the eight most frequently flown to airport by Aer Lingus passengers.

AerClub is Aer Lingus’ new loyalty programme. It rewards people who fly with Aer Lingus in a variety of ways. Some people may think they don’t fly often enough to qualify for a loyalty programme but in reality, everyone, even those who only fly a few times a year can qualify for some real benefits. The best part? It's free to join AerClub.

Of course the more you fly, the more benefits you’ll accrue. AerClub has a tiered membership, Green, Silver, Platinum and Concierge, each with certain benefits from collecting Avios points to priority boarding, lounge access and companion tickets. Green is the entry level membership and signing up will automatically give you membership.

Collect Avios points when you fly and in your everyday spending

Once you’ve signed up to the Green tier you can start collecting Avios points. You will collect Avios points every time you fly Aer Lingus, or their partner airlines, which you can then convert into more flights when you want to treat yourself to a European city break, a short hop to London or that long planned trip to New York City.

You can earn even more points when booking your hotel for your next break away through Avios hotel partners.

With AerClubs many retail partners such as SuperValu and Kildare Village, you can also collect Avios points. You can pick up points on your everyday shopping which you can then spend on flights.

Whether you are dreaming of your next family holiday or planning a romantic weekend getaway, joining AerClub and collecting Avios points is a smart way to turn your shopping into flights to wherever you want.
