Hector visits The Little Mill, run by one family for seven generations

It’s been five years since SuperValu launched its Food Academy programme, and to mark this milestone Hector went on a foodie roadshow to meet some of the wonderful producers who have taken part in the programme.

Travelling to Kilkenny, Hector dropped into The Little Mill, where for seven generations, they have created the very finest stoneground wholemeals from their mill on the banks of the River Nore in Bennetsbridge, Kilkenny. The family-owned company has a rich heritage providing the bakery trade with products developed in their own mill.

Nowadays, The Little Mill also produces its own bread mixes and a recently developed range of wholemeal flours for home bakers. Run by father and son duo, Rob and Bill Mosse, The Little Mill has brought its fabulous, handmade products to even more Irish households through its participation in SuperValu’s Food Academy in partnerhsip with Bord Bia.

“Food Academy has been a fantastic education. Learning how to sell and market your product in a retail environment has many complexities which can feel very daunting at times. The SuperValu team offer support and guidance to navigate your way through to success.”

Since the programme began in 2013, Food Academy producers, supported by their local Enterprise Offices, have sold €78 million worth of produce in SuperValu stores and the 329 suppliers involved have grown to provide approximately 1,500 jobs.

The Little Mix is still very much a family-run business, but as the company has grown so too, has their team.

“Along our journey we’ve managed to employ a team of local people to help ease the hard work which has made a huge difference to us and them.”

The Little Mill products are perfect for making modern-day treats like brownies, or more traditional favourites like brown bread and scones. Interestingly, the methods used at the mill haven’t changed all that much since production began hundreds of years ago.

“The basic technology hasn’t changed,” Bill explains. “The machines are a bit brighter and made of modern material but the actual physics behind it hasn’t changed.”

The Mosse family is truly passionate about what they do. The simple pleasure that home baking brings is something they want every customer to experience, and it couldn’t be easier with their natural, Irish-made baking mixes.
