Do you want to get smarter with your money? Are you conscious of getting the very most out of your current account?

An innovative new Smart Current Account has been launched by An Post with a tangible money back feature which has been praised by consumer advocate, The Money Doctor John Lowe, who points out that Irish consumers now have the chance to “easily make considerable savings on their everyday household spend”.

A game-changer in the current account market, the Smart Account combines a MoneyBack feature, along with other innovative features such as the Smart Account Wallet, a household budgeting tool. Account holders will be provided with a Smart Account Debit Card in partnership with Mastercard® which is accepted across the full Mastercard® network internationally, along with access to online payments and a user-friendly Smart Account app where customers can manage their money.

The MoneyBack feature has been designed to maximise opportunities for savvy shoppers to earn money back. The An Post Smart Current Account will keep track of monies spent at participating retailers and then a MoneyBack payment goes straight back in to users’ accounts at the end of the following month. There is no limit on how much MoneyBack account holders can earn.

An Post has created partnerships where a large portion of Ireland’s household budgets are spent – on groceries, clothing, sportswear, energy, insurance, leisure and holidays. 

Some of the opportunities to earn MoneyBack include:

• 5% back on all Lidl transactions of €25 and above

• 10% back on Direct Debit bills with the SSE Airtricity MoneyBack plan

• 5% back on all direct payments to Post Insurance on car and home insurance

• 8% back on in-store and online spend with Intersport Elverys

• 5% back on all holidays with Sunway

So how do you apply for a Smart Account?

All you have to do is complete the application form online at or at the Post Office. You then take your signed application form to the Post Office along with proof of identity such as a passport, EU driving licence or public service card with a birth certificate. You will need a proof of address no older than 6 months (household bill, bank statement or a letter from Revenue or the Department of Social Protection.

An Post Smart Current Account users will be able to lodge, withdraw or check a balance at the Post Office. The Smart Account Debit Card can be used at any ATM, online or at any retailer worldwide, wherever the Mastercard acceptance sign is displayed and the account can be managed online or via the Smart Account app.
