Everything you need to know about the changes to Lotto and New Lotto Plus

We’ve all dreamt of becoming a millionaire at some point in our lives and the National Lottery is the most likely way that most of us could hope to achieve it.

That is why the latest changes to Lotto Plus might be of interest. More prizes and more millionaires – sounds good to us. Here’s what you need to know about all the recent changes to Lotto Plus and how it could help you add a few zeroes to your bank account.

What’s all the fuss about?

The big news is that the National Lottery will now be creating more winners and more millionaires. That means that you’ve even more chance of winning when you play Lotto with New Lotto Plus.

Are my odds of winning improved?

Your odds of winning a prize on Lotto with Lotto Plus used to be one in 17 but they’ve now dropped to one in 10. That’s a pretty big difference so you have an even better chance of picking up a prize every time you play. The odds of winning the main jackpot are unchanged but your odds of becoming a millionaire if you play Lotto Plus have certainly improved.

What does it mean for players?

The big news is that the top prize in Lotto Plus 1 has now doubled from €500,000 to €1 million and there are now three more ways to win on Lotto Plus. That means that the National Lottery will be creating even more millionaires.

Tell me more about these extra prizes.

There are three new ways to pick up prizes. You can now win when you match two numbers and the bonus number on Lotto Plus 1, when you match three numbers on Lotto Plus 2 and when you match two numbers and the bonus number on Lotto Plus 2. So there’s even more chance of your lucky numbers coming up.

If you get two numbers and the bonus number on Lotto Plus 1, you’ll win a €2 Daily Million ticket (two lines, no Plus). If you get three numbers on Lotto Plus 2, you’ll win a €3 cash prize. And if you match two numbers and the bonus number on Lotto Plus 2, you’ll win a €2 Daily Million (two lines, no Plus).

Is there any other good news?

There is indeed. The Lotto Plus Raffle has jumped up from €300 to €500, giving players an extra benefit of winning if they play the Lotto Plus on Wednesday and Saturday. Players who choose to play Lotto Plus will have a number on their ticket that qualifies them for a special raffle draw. It’s yet another chance to pocket a nice little cash prize when you play.

And the Lotto Plus Million Euro Raffle will now take place a few times throughout the year. That’s even more chances to get lucky.

Does this mean I’ll have to pay more?

The price is going up for Lotto Plus but this is the first time that there has been a price increase on this game in 16 years. The minimum cost of playing Lotto with Lotto Plus has gone from €5 to €6. The cost of Lotto Plus has gone from 50c per line to €1 per line but lower odds and more prizes should help to offset this rise in price.

Can we expect to see more millionaires?

You can expect an average of 16 extra millionaires to be created every year as a result of these new changes. Imagine what you could do with a cool million!

Do I have to play Lotto Plus?

No, playing Lotto Plus is still an optional extra. Playing will give you a chance to enter two extra draws but you do not have to take this option.

Apart from creating more winners, what will the impact of these changes be?

More prizes and bigger jackpots are good news for players but that’s not the only good thing to come from these changes. The National Lottery has always used the funds raised to help great causes across Ireland. Around 30c of every Euro spent on National Lottery games goes towards the Good Causes fund and helps people all across Ireland.

It’s expected that the new changes will raise an extra €5.5 million for Good Causes every year, so it’s a win-win scenario.
