Cork is renowned for its beauty but a new photography book is giving people a chance to enjoy the beauty of the Rebel County from the air.

Cork - From the Air is full of stunning aerial images of Cork city and county by photographer, Dennis Horgan. A native of Cork, Dennis was well placed to capture some of the county’s most interesting and impressive sites from the air.

Many of the shots were spontaneous, inspired by something that Dennis noticed while in the air, but others were designed to capture momentous occasions. One such shot is the photo of Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the book, which was taken on the day that the newly-renovated stadium hosted its first match in 2017.

“I was really looking forward to taking that because I had never seen the completed stadium from the air,” he recalls. “I remembered the old Páirc Uí Chaoimh and this was brilliant. It was a new 45,000-seater stadium in Cork and I was able to get the shot of it on the day the first match was ever played.”

Taking the perfect photo requires a lot of planning and effort but it can also involve a certain degree of luck. You need to have suitable weather conditions and to be in right place at the right time to get the right shot.

One of his favourite photographs in the book is the one of Fastnet Rock, partly due to the difficulty he had in getting the shot.

“The Fastnet Rock is about 10 or 11 miles offshore and we went there in a small plane on a very windy day. I tried to get that shot about three times! I failed due to fog. Another time we had a fuel leak and we had to go back, but the third time was well worth it. That’s my favourite picture in the Cork book.”
