Ballerina has a dance-off with herself, and it's beautiful

Sasha Kinch

Alessandra Ferri was the youngest ever principal dancer at The Royal Ballet. Thirty three years later, she is still dazzling audiences.

Alessandra Ferri was just 19 years old when she became a principal dancer at The Royal Ballet. She was the youngest dancer ever to hold this rank. After a very successful career, she retired at the age of 44. She shares this experience in a recent interview.

"At one point, when I was 44, I became more insecure. I was afraid of people judging me, afraid of the comparison of myself. So I thought it was time to stop."

Fear in the face of judgement or insecurity about age or ability can be a stopper for creativity and success. Ferri took six years off and enjoyed them, but she felt something was missing.

"The first years, I really enjoyed the time, I enjoyed being a mother. And then I realised, I am a mother, whether I stay at home or not. I am Alessandra, the human being who has to dance, who feels complete in herself when she dances."

Ferri returned to dance after retirement in 2013, starring in a number of performances since then.

"It was not easy getting back in shape, but I'm back and it feels great. I have stopped comparing myself to the 19 year old girl who started. She is inside of me."

This is clear in the beautiful television advert that was commissioned by No. 7. In it, you see Ferri at 19 and Ferri nowadays, appearing to compete with one another in a stunning routine.

Alessandra Ferri talks about her realisation that no matter what age you are, you can be ready to inspire.

"The real beauty is to dance as who you are, in the present moment. There is no need to show off to myself, I have more inner power and that comes across."

Ferri is an inspiration to all women. She breaks the chains of conformity, showing the world that no matter where you are in life, you can take the centre stage and make a positive impact on the world.

"I want to share my enthusiasm for life with every women, particularly women of my age, and for the present moment and for being who we are, and be proud of what we did and what we do."

Alessandra Ferri's incredible talent, hard work and immense determination have made her one of ballet's most important artists, defying the limitation of age.
