As safe as houses – How to secure your home from a burglary

Our home is our sanctuary. We invest in it, we want it to look it’s best and we want to keep it safe at all times. Unfortunately, home burglaries occur, and are even on the rise in Ireland.

According to research carried out by PhoneWatch, who are sponsors of the Exhibitor Lounge at house 2018, there were 19,092 burglaries in 2017 up from 18,478 the previous year.

The research also found that a quarter of burglars enter through the front door of a home with the most common time for them to occur is between 5-11pm. January, September and November are the most common months for a burglary to take place.

How does your county rank?

So, what can you do to keep your home safe from a potential burglary?

It might seem obvious, but close all your windows and lock your doors properly – remember, most burglars enter through the front door, back door or a back window

Keep your lights on! As most burglaries occur at night time in the winter months, light up your home well or use a timer switch if you aren’t at home

  • Refrain from social media – don’t announce that you will be going on holidays
  • Don’t advertise your valuables – keep expensive items away from windows
  • Sleep well at night and make sure all doors and windows are locked
  • Don’t keep spare keys outside – give them to a neighbour

A PhoneWatch home is four times safer and less likely to be burgled. Their Home Safety System includes sensors and built in cameras, monitored smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, a panic button facility and a smartphone app.
