1. Transylvania

Romania is one of the most fascinating countries in Europe and a seven-night walking holiday through Dracula country will bring you to some of its most beguiling spots.

As part of this tour of Translyvania, you’ll spend five nights in the pretty Saxon town of Brasov. Over the course of five walking days, you’ll explore the mountain ranges that make up the Carpathian Mountains (home to one of the largest undisturbed forests in Europe and the majority of the continent’s brown bear population), trekking through lush green forests, wild flower meadows, rugged canyons and sparkling lakes.

You’ll also get to visit Bran Castle, one of the homes of Transylvania’s famous figures, Vlad the Impaler (aka Dracula), and the country’s charming capital city, Bucharest, where the beer is so cheap that two pints will set you back less than a fiver.

The tour will be divided into two walking routes on most walking days - leisurely and moderate, depending on your fitness levels.

2. Sri Lanka

The much-celebrated Sri Lanka has been on nearly every travel guides’ must-see destination for 2019, almost 10 years after the end of its civil war. Lonely Planet named it the best country in the world to visit this year, citing a growing number of activities and improved infrastructure as some of its reasons.

Get there ahead of the pack with TD active Holiday’s 13-night small group tour which brings you through ancient cities, temples and idyllic beaches. You’ll take in a selection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the ancient city of Polonnaruwa by bicycle, Dambulla Cave Temple and climb the spectacular Lion's Rock fortress in Sigiriya.

Adventure junkies will love the white water rafting experience on Kelani River and the chance to get up close with the country’s incredible wildlife on a safari game drive in the Udawalawe National Park. Some downtime is also promised with a trip to some of the country’s lesser known beaches.

3. Patagonia

Wind-swept and immense, Patagonia has been luring adventure travellers ever since Magellan set sail there in the mid-16th century. The landscape sparked the imagination of a young Charles Darwin and inspired author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

The region continues to call out to intrepid travellers with its snow-capped peaks and great icefields, remnants of the last Ice Age. Located on South America’s southern triangle, the vast space is shared by Argentina and Chile and is ideal for any outdoors enthusiast. TD active Holidays offer a 14-night holiday that takes you through the wild and rugged landscapes, fitting in city stops in Argentina’s sultry capital Buenos Aires and Chile’s charming Santiago. The adventure portion of the trip will kick off with a hike through Mount Fitz Roy in Los Glaciares National Park (home to the only moving glacier in the world) before visiting El Calafate and El Chalten, as well as time spent trekking in the famous Torres del Paine National Park.

4. Montenegro

Montenegro is snapping at the heels of Croatia to become the next Balkans holiday hotspot and adventure travellers will love its looming seaside cliffs, historic charm and heady mix of eastern and western culture. The Adriatic gem is one of the most fascinating European countries to capture on camera.

TD active Holidays is offering a four-night photography tour in Montenegro where budding photographers can practice their landscape, documentary and street photography skills among its most photogenic landscapes. The tour will start off in the walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia before travelling to the historic coastal town of Budva in Montenegro.

It includes a boat trip around the picturesque Boka Bay and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kotor. The tour is in partnership with Dublin Photography School, who’ll provide tips and tutorials on location, and is open to all levels of skill, from beginner to advanced.
