4 of the biggest lottery jackpots of all time

There was no winner of Saturday’s Lotto draw and the jackpot rolls over for €9,617,435 this Wednesday.

That’s a life changing amount of money, but still in respect to other European and US lotto jackpots, it’s small beer!

We all remember when a 1 million pound Lotto jackpot seemed like too much money to even comprehend. But since those early days of the National Lottery in Ireland and the advent of the EuroMillions Lotto we’ve come accustomed to the other eye-watering sums of other lotteries like PowerBall, Mega Millions and Euro Millions jackpots make Irish prizes pale in comparison.

The Italian lottery usually goes into hyper drive around August as the whole country heads for the sea to take their usual holidays around Ferragosto on the 16th of August. The lottery has been rolling over for almost a year and with a jackpot of €123 million it could be on the way to its biggest ever payout. The biggest prize won on SuperEnalotto to date is €177.7 million which was won by a syndicate of 70 people October 30, 2010. However the biggest single winner was one lucky person in Bagnone, Tuscany who scooped €147.8 million individually.

Powerball is a US lottery that runs across 44 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It has the world record for the biggest single payout in lottery history. Some $1.586 billion, was split between 3 Powerball tickets in Chino Hills, California, Melbourne Beach, Florida and Munford, Tennessee, each worth $528.8 million.

Run much in the same way as the Powerball game, Mega Millions in the US paid out the second largest prize in history! The prize is offered as a 30 payment annuity, or fixed payments over time, but usually winners choose a reduced cash prize as they prefer to take the money and run. The largest jackpot in Mega Millions history was $656 million (annuity value) in 2012. There were 3 jackpot-winning tickets; 1 each in Illinois, Kansas, and Maryland. All 3 tickets had been claimed by April 18, with each set of winners choosing the cash option of $158 million, a 1/3 share.[5] The largest Mega Millions prize was $326 million (annuity) for the lone winning ticket of the Nov 4, 2014 drawing; it was purchased in New York.

We’re all familiar with the EuroMillions lottery ever since Dolores McNamara, a 45-yr-old mother of 6 from Garryowen, Limerick claimed the biggest individual winner in EuroMillions history at the time with a jackpot of €115,436,126. Since then we’ve been playing regularly, with some success. Only in January of this year a prize of €132,376,632 was split between 2 anonymous ticket holders, one in Ireland and one in France. The biggest ever payout by EuroMillions was €190,000,000 which went to Adrian and Gillian Bayford of Haverhill, Suffolk. allows you to participate in the biggest and most exciting lotteries in the world such as the tremendous European lotteries EuroMillions, EuroJackpot, and the massive American lotteries Powerball and MegaMillions, directly from your computer, tablet or mobile phone!
