It took France less than five minutes to flex their muscles against Canada, but their opponents were guilty of poor missed tackles as Wesley Fofana opened the scoring in Milton Keynes.

Les Bleus went into the match on the back of victories over Italy and Romania, while the Canadians recovered from a heavy defeat to Ireland in their opening match to almost cause a huge upset against Italy last time out.

Guirado followed up Fofana’s effort and it looked like a long night was in store for the minnows, but they upset their opponents with resolve and no shortage of skill.

DTH van der Merwe grabbed his third try of a memorable tournament to finish off a flowing move to keep the underdogs in touch.

Soon after, when it appeared like they had butchered the opportunity to reduce the deficit even further, they continued to pile on the pressure with a try from Carpenter to send the Canadian fans wild.

Slimani broke off a French maul just before the break to ensure the favourites led 24-12 at the interval.

Nathan Hirayama reduced France's lead to just six points over Canada with a well placed penalty.

Pascal Pape lunged over from short range to score France's fourth try of the night against Canada and seal a valuable bonus point.
