He has been impressing Irish football fans with a litany of recent screamers but Martin O'Neill cracked a few jokes about the U21 international Jack Byrne getting a bit ahead of himself this afternoon.

Byrne is on the books at Man City but has been on loan with Cambuur in the Dutch league this season, where the 19-year old has scored three spectacular goals.

As a result of his good form in Holland, Byrne was invited to train with the national team for the first time this afternoon.

When asked to comment on Byrne's recent remarks that he feels he can influence a game at any level, O'Neill gave a brilliant deadpan response.

"I was speaking to him there and he certainly doesn't lack for confidence and if he said that, he thought he could influence games did he? There you are," O'Neill said to laughter.

"I don't know yet. I need to see a wee bit more of him. He might be dumped on his backside by some of the senior players tomorrow. Once I let the senior players know that he has been online-ing, I'll let Glenn Whelan know about that. If you see him being carted off tomorrow you know the boys have read the online stuff."
