AT this remove, it's difficult to comprehend the huge influence Vincent O'Brien had on the world of racing - both on the Flat and over the sticks.

The bare stats are hugely impressive: three Grand Nationals in a row, three Gold Cups in a row and three Champion Hurdles in a row.

After turning his attention to the Flat, he won an astonishing six Epsom Derbies.

But perhaps the best measure of his talents is the list of horses with which he was associated.

Names like Royal Tan, Quare Times, Cottage Rake, Sir Ivor, Nijinsky, The Minstrel and, of course, Sadlers Wells remain familiar to anyone with a passing interest in racing. And they will for many decades to come.
