ITV’s World Cup coverage has come under a lot of criticism this summer, but Irish manager Martin O’ Neill added some much needed spice last night.

Presenter Adrian Chilles had been teasing O’Neil when he asked if he wore glasses while standing in a free-kick wall during his playing days, which provoked laughter from pundits Patrick Vieira and Fabio Cannavaro who were also on punditry duty for the evening.

The Irish boss responded with a quick remark: 'I didn't actually wear glasses when I was playing... and I did actually play the game at one time, Fabio wasn't terribly sure that I had and I had to remind him.

'Actually despite the fact that there are two World Cup winners here, I'd just like to ask "I’ve won two European Cups. I’d just like to know, how many have you two won?"

The comment was met with respectful silence followed by a laugh from former Arsenal and French international Vieira and former Italian skipper Cannavaro.

Vieira later tweeted: 'Getting flashbacks sitting next to Martin O'Neill, feel like being back in the tunnel with Keane...need to sort him in the tunnel.'
