World Cup team preview: Honduras
Fifteen days to the start of the 2014 World Cup and fifteen teams left to preview. Today it is the 3,000/1 rank outsiders Honduras.
Group E – Switzerland, Ecuador, France
Tournament odds – 3000/1
‘Honduras Will Play Three Games and Go Home. Let the Party Begin,’ was the title to one particular World Cup preview on the Central American side and that appears to be the general consensus.
A short, gallant World Cup that is expected to finish after they play Switzerland on June 25th.
In their third World Cup (1982 and 2010), they are still searching for their first win, though a glance at their odds would indicate they may have to wait for their next World Cup for that honour.
Expectations are naturally low, but after three draws and three losses, the main ambition seems to be that elusive win.
How they got there
The qualification process for Honduras was fairly straight forward.
They finished third in the CONCACAF group standings, leaving Mexico and Panama to battle it out for the final spot.
They finished seven points adrift of table toppers the USA and three behind Costa Rica. Conceding 12 goals in 10 games, it is an indication of where the problems may lie in Brazil.
Key man – Wilson Palcios
Izaguirre is arguably the best player in the squad, but Wilson Palacios is the most important. An impressive season at Stoke City after losing his way for a couple 0of years, the all-action midfielder will need to be at the top of his game to stem the pressure his team will undoubtedly come under.
Palacios will sit in front of the back four, protecting his defence with his no-nonsense approach.
Something you may not know about Honduras
The Honduras was discovered by Christopher Columbus. The first words uttered by him when he stepped foot here were- Thank God we found these great depths. The literal meaning of Honduras is “Great Depths”.
