Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford helped England end their penalty shootout hoodoo and reach the World Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Colombia in Moscow.

Captain Harry Kane had given England the lead from the spot just before the hour, only for Colombia to snatch a dramatic equaliser when defender Yerry Mina headed in during stoppage-time.

With neither country able to conjure a winner in extra-time, it went to the lottery of spot-kicks. Jordan Henderson’s penalty was saved, only for Mateus Uribe’s effort to rattle the crossbar and Pickford to then deny Carlos Bacca.

Eric Dier kept his composure in the Spartak Stadium cauldron, propelling Gareth Southgate’s side to a famous victory, winning the shootout 4-3.

Moment of the match

Just when England thought they had done enough to edge into the quarter-finals, with 90 minutes up, Colombia defender Yerry Mina headed in a dramatic equaliser to send the match to extra-time.

England star man – Harry Kane

Apart from being able to keep his head while all around him were losing theirs to convert a second-half penalty, and converting again from the spot with pressure on in the shootout, Kane fronted the England attack with his usual robustness – which was tested to the limit by Colombia’s physical approach.

Stat Attack

Kane took his tally at the 2018 World Cup to six goals, which puts the England forward two clear of Belgian frontman Romelu Lukaku in the race for the Golden Boot. It was the Tottenham man’s 12th goal as captain, in his eighth game with the armband as England ended their record of six penalty shootout defeats in seven at major tournaments.
