Harry Kane’s dramatic last-gasp winner in England’s World Cup opener against Tunisia sparked an overwhelming 52,000 tweets per minute on Monday evening.

England’s campaign looked set to get off on the wrong foot until captain Kane bagged his and England’s second in added time to secure a 2-1 victory in Volgograd.

As the nation breathed a collective sigh of relief and celebrated, Kane’s intervention was unsurprisingly the most tweeted about moment of the match on the social media site.

Kane’s first goal and Tunisia’s controversial equaliser also caused a spike on Twitter while the Tottenham striker was predictably the most talked about player on the night.

Close behind were Raheem Sterling and Jesse Lingard, both of whom were perhaps bearing the brunt of frustration from some England fans after spurning several chances.

According to Google, Kane was the most searched for England player over the course of the game, with Harry Maguire second and fellow defender Kieran Trippier third.
