Marta breaks overall World Cup goalscoring record as Brazil record Group C victory over Italy
Italy, Australia and Brazilians all qualify for Last 16 as Jamaica bow out
Brazilian star Marta broke the World Cup finals goals record in both the men's and women's game as her penalty helped beat Italy in the Group C clash in Valenciennes.
The striker scored her 17th goal across five World Cup tournaments to overturn Germany forward Miroslav Klose's 16-goal record in the men's version.
Marta, the only player to score at five different World Cups, converted a spot kick in the 74th minute as Brazil finished third in Group C on six points, level with Italy, who top the group on goal difference and Australia.
Australia finished second despite having the same goal difference as Brazil, with the Aussies' 3-2 win over Brazil last week nudging them ahead of their South American counterparts.
Sam Kerr struck four times to send Australia through to the last 16 with a 4-1 victory against Jamaica.
Kerr struck twice either side of the interval. Jamaica bagged their first goal of the tournament through Havana Solaun but finished bottom of the Group after three defeats.
The Group C results mean Italy will play either Nigeria or China in the last 16, while Australia will play Norway.
Brazil will play either Germany or France.
