West Bromwich Albion sign Birmingham City goalkeeper Ben Foster for £4m a permanent deal

Ben Foster has completed a £4m move from Birmingham City to West Bromwich Albion to become Steve Clarke's first signing at the Hawthorns.

Foster, the former England international goalkeeper, joined West Bromwich Albion on loan last season and has now completed a permanent switch across the West Midlands.

The 29-year-old becomes the second departure from Birmingham City in a week but his departure was always expected, with negotiations ongoing between the two clubs since April.

He tweeted: "Really happy to have just signed for West Bromwich Albion, thx to the fans for making me feel so welcome last year, can't wait to get started."

Foster's exit ensures that Jack Butland, the 19-year-old, will be Lee Clark's No 1 for next season if the club manage to resist interest from a string of Premier League predators, most notably Southampton.

Birmingham are also set to lose highly-rated goalkeeping coach Dave Watson, who is expected to join Chris Hughton at Norwich.

Watson has asked for permission to speak to Norwich and Hughton's new club are prepared to meet the compensation figure required to take him to East Anglia.
