Wayne Rooney poised to meet with DC United to discuss possible MLS transfer
Wayne Rooney will meet officials from DC United this week before determining if it is the right move should he leave Everton.
A year on from his emotional Goodison homecoming, Rooney has a decision to make and the lucrative offer from the Major League Soccer team is under consideration.
There is no deal in place. Rooney was never going to be rushed into leaving Goodison without considering all aspects of such a move abroad.
Aside from the footballing aspect of such a switch, the former England captain will be assessing if it is right for his young family.
Washington does not necessarily hold the same attraction as other areas of the United States such as Los Angeles or New York. Rooney will also be receiving other offers, although financially there is a significant package should he join DC.
The eagerness of the MLS side to pursue such a a coveted signing has put them in pole position.
Everton are close to announcing Marco Silva as their new manager. Silva is holding talks with the new director of football, Marcel Brands, and it seems only a matter of time before he is in place.
Rooney’s ongoing conversations with DC United reflect his uncertainty he will be a key part of the new manager’s plans. It was suggested Rooney’s future was linked to that of Sam Allardyce, but that was never really the case.
Regardless of the identity of the manager, Rooney wanted to be sure he can contribute to Everton next season.
