Javi Gracia has been confirmed as the new head coach of Watford, with the Premier League club naming their new head coach just a few hours after they confirmed the departure of Marco Silva.

The 47-year-old tactician, who has signed an 18-month contact with the Hornets, has previously coached clubs in his native Spain as well as Greece and Russia.

During two seasons with Malaga he achieved back-to-back top-10 La Liga finishes, with his swift arrival at Watford so soon after Silva's sacking appearing to confirm plans for this change have been in place for some time.

Silva was sacked earlier on Sunday, with the club claiming the "unwarranted approach" from Everton last October was the catalyst for the decision.

"This has been a difficult decision and one not taken lightly," read a Watford club statement.

"The Club is convinced the appointment of Silva was the right one and had it not been for the unwarranted approach by a Premier League rival for his services we would have continued to prosper under his leadership.

"The catalyst for this decision is that unwarranted approach, something which the Board believes has seen a significant deterioration in both focus and results to the point where the long-term future of Watford FC has been jeopardised.

"For the security and success of the football club, the Board believes it has to make a change."
