Brighton and Ireland have been left waiting for a fitness update on young striker Evan Ferguson following a horror tackle on him from Fabinho in the Seagulls’ dramatic FA Cup win over the Reds.

Brighton’s 2-1 win dumped Cup holders Liverpool out of the competition, Kaoru Mitoma with a stunning injury-time winner, leaving the Reds with the Champions League as their only possible route to a trophy this season.

But a huge talking point in the game was a tackle on Ferguson by Fabinho four minutes from time, where the Reds player was fortunate to come away with only a yellow card.

Ferguson appeared to be in pain as he left the field and he will be assessed. His club boss, Roberto de Zerbi, held back from attacking Fabinho for the challenge, or an earlier tackle from Ibrahima Konate.

"I don't like to talk about them,” De Zerbi said. "Fabinho, I'm sure, is an honest, correct player. On the pitch, this can happen, this accident, this foul."

Asked if Ferguson was OK, he said: "No, we'll see in the next days if it's an important injury."

Losing Ferguson at this stage of the season, when his side are on a run that could lead to qualification for Europe as well as their FA Cup campaign, would be a major blow for De Zerbi.

But Ireland boss Stephen Kenny will also be eager for an update on Ferguson, even though the next competitive game is more than seven seeks away when France visit Dublin.
