Ward nicks spoils for Mary's

FAI Schools Senior Cup

There was a dramatic finish at Flancare Park in Longford yesterday as St Mary's College from Galway city snatched the title in the final minute of extra-time.

Striker Tony Ward was the hero for St Mary's as he pounced to secure their fourth All-Ireland title.

The final seemed destined to head to penalties when Ward ran on to a long throw from Shane Maughan, held off two challenges and rounded the goalkeeper before blasting the ball home.

After a scoreless first half, Mary's struck just 20 seconds after the restart when Sean Glynn met a cross from Barry McEntee to head into the bottom right corner.

Mary's looked like they would hold out but Salesian struck 15 minutes from the end. After an effort from Bryan Bonyoy came back off the crossbar, Michael O'Grady finished into the left corner.

Colm Smyth looked to have blasted a dramatic winner for Salesian but his volley was turned around the post by Ronan Burke to send the final to extra-time.
