Former West Ham, Derby and Manchester City striker Paulo Wanchope has resigned as Costa Rica coach after being involved in a brawl during a match.

The 39-year-old retaliated after being pushed by a man during the under-23 Olympic qualifying match against Panama on Tuesday.

A statement from the Costa Rica Football Federation read: "After a cordial meeting, the manager has decided to step aside.

"He was grateful for the possibility to work for us, while the Federation thanks him for his work and wishes him every success."

Wanchope had held the position since January, having become an assistant coach last year.
