trap's warm tribute

GIOVANNI Trapattoni paid a warm tribute to Alex Ferguson after the Scot's decision to retire, writes Daniel McDonnell.

The two senior citizens will go down in history as genuine greats and they sit joint top of the list of managers who have won major European club competitions with six apiece.

Commenting through the FAI, the Italian hailed Ferguson's ability to successfully bring about a transition in his team and taste success with different generations.

"I would like to congratulate Alex Ferguson on a superb career," said Trap.

"He should be recognised for the incredible results that he achieved, which were down to his expert knowledge and his capacity for planning that enabled him to rebuild and renew his Manchester United side countless times during his tenure as manager.

"Even bowing out, he leaves a great legacy for the future with his current title-winning side."
