Schalke chief hits back at Bayern Munich over their pursuit over Liverpool target Leon Goretzka

Schalke's sporting director Christian Heidel has reacted angrily to Bayern Munich's outspoke pursuit of Leon Goretzka.

Goretzka's Schalke contract is due to expire at the end of the season and he has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool and Bayern Munich, with the second of those options appearing to edge closer in recent days after Bayern's Sporting Director Hasan Salihamidzic confirmed his club's interest in the player.

"Leon Goretzka is a great player, that's clear," said Salihamidzic. "He is a Schalke player and we obviously respect that, but he is a Germany international and we can say that we are interested in him."

Heidel was critical of those comments over a player that looks set to seal a lucrative move in the summer as he offered up these comments.

"We do not want any unrest at Schalke," he stated. "Bayern insist Leon is a Schalke player but still talk about a Schalke player more than they do any of their own.

"This way speculation is fuelled. We should not have to listen to (Bayern) Munich telling us every day how good the player is."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made no comment on his interest in Goretzka, who is now free to discuss a move this summer as his contract has less than six months left to run.
