Paper Talk: United could make late swoop for £25m Berahino with Evans going the other direction
Manchester United could steal ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign West Brom striker Saido Berahino.
The England international has been at the centre of two rejected bids from Spurs, with the latest offer of £21m deemed unsatisfactory by the Baggies.
Berahino saw a transfer request dismissed by his club on Monday and Albion chairman Jeremy Peace has maintained Albion are not looking to sell the 22-year-old. Club sources have indicated the club are holding out for a fee of £25m.
The Daily Express reports that Louis van Gaal may be about to pounce with an offer less than a week before the transfer window closes
United have been linked with a number of strikers and Berahoni, a life-long Red Devils fan, could be the most cost-effective option.
A player who may be going in the opposite direction is centre-half Jonny Evans.
The Northern Ireland man has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and his future appears to lie away from the club. A move to Everton was mooted earlier in the summer, but The Sun suggests that the Baggies are keen to bring the player to the Hawthorns.
United are again linked with Borussia Dortmund's Jakub Blaszczykowski. The Pole has a number of Premier League suitors and with a £10m asking price, will face competition from Liverpool and Arsenal.
Under contract until 2018, it is thought the player is unhappy with his current deal and is hoping to secure a move before the close of the window.
