Manchester United are on the verge of sealing their fourth transfer of the summer after Morgan Schneiderlin underwent a medical ahead of a £24m move from Southampton.

Manchester Evening News revealed late on Sunday night that the 25-year-old travelled to United's Carrington training base to complete a medical and put the finishing touches on a transfer that will see him join the club's pre-season tour to the United States, which flies out later today.

Schneiderlin, who pushed for a move to Tottenham last summer only to see Saints block the move, becomes United's fourth signing of the summer, and reports suggested that he was seen arriving in Manchester just five minutes after United's latest addition Bastian Schweinsteiger turned up to compete his move from Bayern Munich.

Both deals are expected to be announced today and come as part of an £80m overhaul to Louis van Gaal's squad.

Van Gaal and United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward have already landed £23m Netherlands forward Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven, while in Saturday they completed the £12.7m deal for Italy defender Matteo Darmian, who joins from Serie A side Torino.

It had been suggested that the move for Schweinsteiger would end interest in Schneiderlin for the summer, but United have clearly been able to negotiate a deal with Saints that they believe is worthwhile after their initial £20m was laughed off by Southampton. Manager Ronald Koeman publicly told United to come back when they had a "serious offer".

The acquisitions this summer leave serious questions over who will stay at Old Trafford this summer. A new look midfield is likely to see both Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin start, with Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini all battling for the third midfield role that Van Gaal deploys. Depay's addition raised fears that club record signing Angel Di Maria could leave the club just one year after his £59.7m move from Real Madrid broke the British transfer record, while Darmian's arrival is set to spell the end of Rafael's United career.

United's spending is set to continue though, with the club desperate to sign a new striker after Robin van Persie left the club in order to compete his move to Fenerbahce. The £4.7m move to Turkey could be announced today after the Netherlands captain arrived in Istanbul on Sunday evening to a ferocious welcome from Fenerbahce supporters.

Interest in Thomas Muller has died down somewhat given that Bayern are unwilling to sell two of their players to a Champions League rival, but Tottenham's Harry Kane remains an option, while the club are being linked with a move for Aston Villa's wantaway striker Christian Benteke.

The Belgium international has a £32.5m release clause in his contract, and Villa are likely to hold out for that fee with the club in no rush to sell. Liverpool have been linked with a move for the 24-year-old after agreeing to sell Raheem Sterling to Manchester City, but United can use the promise of Champions League football this season to persuade the Belgian that his future lies at Old Trafford.
