Manchester United have made a £60m bid for Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller, according to German newspaper Bild.

There have been rumours linking Muller with United all summer, and reports say the club have stepped up their interest.

Louis van Gaal is known to be an admirer of the player, whom he worked with while at Bayern, and is desperate to bolster his attacking options.

Currently Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez are the only strikers at the manager's disposal.

Bayern have repeatedly said that Muller is not for sale however, and last month chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge rubbished the speculation.

He said: "There are players who don't have a price tag. We would have lost our senses if we allowed such a player to leave.

"It's a hoax that left Munich but then sunk in the Pacific. There's nothing in it."

However an improved bid could be too much even for Bayern to turn down.

Meanwhile, United could be the victim of a stunning gazumping from Chelsea over the signing of Barcelona winger Pedro.

The Telegraph reports that Chelsea have entered the race to land Pedro and hope to convince the Spaniard to move to Stamford Bridge after holding talks with Barcelona.

Manchester United had been heavy favourites to sign the winger but have been haggling over the £22million fee, which has let Chelsea in and the Blues are hopeful they can conclude a deal.

Meanwhile in Spain, Marca reports that Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas could be used as a makewight in the David de Gea deal.

Real are unwilling to pay the £35m United want for the Spanish keeper, and this could be a way of satisfying both parties.

Navas starred for Costa Rica at the 2014 World Cup, and is currently Real's first choice goalie.

Finally, according to The Express, United have not given up hope of signing French defender Aymeric Laporte.

Chief executive Ed Woodward reportedly took a look at the Bilbao centre-back against Barcelona, for whom Pedro was playing.

Laporte has a £36.5m buyout clause, which United may look to exercise before the end of the month.
