Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool to battle it out for €42m Premier League striker
Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke is at the centre of €42m bidding war with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool weighing up a move for the Belgian international.
The 24-year-old has finished the season in blistering form and has 12 goals in 26 games in a Villa side that has struggled for large parts of the season.
While there have been fitness doubts raised over the former Genk man – he missed the 2014 World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon – the leading lights in the Premier League have emerged as suitors, along with Serie A side Roma.
According to reports from Mirror Football this morning, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Brendan Rodgers are looking to Benteke to bolster their striking options.
Liverpool are the most in-need of firepower and the Belgian has tormented the Reds on a number of occasions, including a brace two years ago during an emphatic away win on Merseyside.
There is growing speculation that United may take up the option to retain the services of Colombian striker Falcao on a reduced deal, though with doubts surrounding the future of Robin van Persie, another striker could be heading to Old Trafford this summer.
Chelsea is another option, though has been a graveyard for a number of striker sin recent years with Mourinho preferring the one-man up top policy.
Benteke has claimed eleven goals and one assist in his last ten appearances across all competitions – bringing his total for the Birmingham outfit to 48 goals in 97 outings.
