Liverpool transfer blow as Ben Chilwell decides to stay at Leicester
Ben Chilwell is close to signing a new five-year deal at Leicester City in another huge boost for Claudio Ranieri.
Leicester have made an improved contract offer to the England U20 international in a bid to kill off interest from Liverpool and expect to reach an agreement in the next few days.
Chilwell was the subject of a £7 million bid from Liverpool last month but Leicester were always clear that the highly-rated defender was not for sale.
Arsenal failed with a bid for the 19-year-old before he even made his Leicester debut and his reputation at Academy level has also seen him scouted by Chelsea and Manchester City.
Leicester have been trying to persuade Chilwell to sign a new deal since the start of the year but have now returned with terms of around £30,000 a week.
Chilwell is expected to sign within days and stake a claim for a place in Ranieri’s first team, as Leicester prepare to defend their Premier League title.
The development represents a blow for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who had identified Chilwell as a priority signing in January.
Liverpool were reluctant to pay over £10 million for a player yet to make a Premier League appearance but Klopp will be frustrated at missing out.
