Liverpool keen on signing Juventus defender Martin Caceres
Liverpool are interested in signing Juventus defender Martin Caceres this month, according to reports in Italy.
According to Sport Mediaset, via talkSPORT, Jurgen Klopp will try and sign the Uruguayan before the end of the transfer window to bolster his injury-hit defence.
Caceres, 28, will be out of contract in the summer, but Liverpool's defensive woes mean they're in need of a more immediate solution.
Elsewhere, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy's determination to be perceived as possessing the hardest nose in football may have opened the way for Liverpool to steal in and pip Spurs and Stoke City in the race to sign the West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino.
Both the Express and the Mirror have stuck their necks out but not placed them on the line to proclaim that Liverpool's intetest is very real (with one or two understandable caveats). Should they decide to sell Daniel Sturridge and find a buyer at their asking price then it makes it slightly more likely apparently.
The Reds' hopes of securing a loan deal for Borussia Dortmund's Neven Subotic have been blocked by Jurgen Klopp's successor as manager at the Westfalenstadion.
Thomas Tuchel announced that he was reluctant to let the defender leave: "To Subotic, I can say that we need him as an integral part of the team. If it remains solely my decision, there is not the slightest reason for a change."
Who to believe here, the Daily Star or Klopp? The Star reckons Alexandre Pato is very close to signing for Liverpool.
The manager, however, when asked about it said: "My private advice to you is don't follow the Pato path any longer." Private/public ... is anyone going to take a blind bit of notice?
Last summer Liverpool were reported to have made a €15m bid for Schalke's 19-year-old winger Leroy Sane. They were turne down and now ESPN says Man City, Barcelona and Real Madrid have joined the race which may push the price as high as €50m.
According to Kicker and Bild Klopp has had Sane watched on several occasions as he bids to bolster his attacking options but would balk at getting into an auction with those three clubs.
International Business Times reports that Liverpool will soon discover if they can take Real Madrid winger Jesé on loan. He came off the bench to play 20 minutes in the 5-0 defeat of Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday but Real are weighing up offers from Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Sociedad for a temporary deal.
If Zinedine Zidane gives him more time on the pitch it is likely that his agent's clamour for him to leave to gain more experienec will die down but Liverpool remain in the running because Zidane also has to find opportunities for Lucas Silva and Mateo Kovacic.
