Republic of Ireland international James McClean edged closer to a MLS switch after flying Stateside to speak to interested clubs.

The Derry native is widely expected to leave Wigan this summer following their relegation to League One, and he may be about to join the growing Irish contingent in MLS.

Robbie Keane, Sean St Ledger and, soon to be, Kevin Doyle will be playing across the Atlantic and the winger flew to New York at the weekend for talks amid interest from both Orlando City and New York Red Bulls.

Newcastle United and Derby County are also reported to be monitoring the situation of the 25-cap Irish international.

McClean's contract at Wigan is worth in the region of €30k a week is likely to scupper any potential move to Glasgow Celtic, who had previously been linked with the former Sunderland man.
