Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy could be set for a return to the city of his birth, according to reports.

Celtic, bolstered by the £25m boost that comes with Champions League qualification, are preparing a bid for McCarthy who is out-of-favour with new Everton boss Ronald Koeman.

According to reports in The Daily Mail, Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring the 25-year-old to Parkhead.

The Scottish champions have been drawn in a daunting group on their return to Europe's elite competition with Spanish champions Barcelona, Pep Guardiola's Man City and Borussia Monchengladbach awaiting them in Group E.

Elsewhere, Ireland's Shane Duffy appears to be close to sealing a move to Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Derry native is expected to make the move to Chris Hughton's side before the end of the transfer window.
