Republic of Ireland legend John Giles has called on West Ham to get the best price possible for wantaway star Dimitri Payet and turf him out of the club.
Payet has stunned West Ham United by telling the club he will never play for them again after they rejected a bid of just under £20 million from Marseille.
West Ham have pleaded with the French international to see through the season with them, as they desperately fight to climb the table, and have agreed to sell him this summer – but he has refused.
Payet, who has been unsettled since returning from the Euros last summer, has been encouraged to push for the move back to his former club who he left in 2015 for an initial fee of £10.7 million rising to £14 million.
Speaking at a press conference today, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic struggled to hide his disappointment after revealing that the French international has downed tools.
“We have said we don't want to sell our best players but Payet does not want to play for us," Bilic said. "We are not going to sell him."
“I expect from him to come back and to show commitment and determination to the team like the team has shown to him.
"We aren't going to sell him, not whatsoever. It's not a money issue or anything. We want to keep our best players.
"I spoke to the chairman and this is not a money issue. We gave him a long contract because we want him to stay."
Speaking on Off The Ball on Newstalk this evening, Giles advised Bilic to get rid of the 29-year-old and warned of the caustic effect his presence might have on the rest of the squad.
"If I was the manager I'd feel very angry as well and it shows that players are on top now rather than the clubs," he said.
"In the old days, you signed a contract and you couldn't leave until the club wanted you to leave.
"Payet signed a long-term contract and now he's saying he doesn't want to play anymore. The contract doesn't mean anything anymore, unless the club say they're not going to let him leave and he sits around for two years but they can't afford to do that.
"In Payet's case, I think it's dreadful behaviour. If you sign a contract, you should honour that contract.
"He went to West Ham last year and he was a sensation and people wondered why he's 28... where has he been all his life?
"This might tell you.
"I think it's dreadful for a club that's trying to plan for the future.
"If I was Bilic, I'd get the best price I could for him and I'd kick him out.
"You can't have a player like that in the dressingroom that all the other players know want to leave. You need to have a team spirit and a team that is going to go out and fight for each other.
"He hasn't played this year.. he's been terrible and he's done it on purpose.
"You can't have someone in your team who really wants to go because you're humiliating the manager."
Giles believes that it will be impossible to convince Payet to stay.
"I don't think he will be talked back," he added.
"This deal has been done with Payet... wherever he's going. It's been done and all the other club is saying is that you have to get away.
"He wouldn't make a stand like that unless the club was interested.
"He won't have agreed terms, his agent will have and the player could say: 'I didn't speak to that club'. because he isn't allowed but his agent has done the deal."
Jose Fonte has been left out of the Southampton squad for Wednesday night’s EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool after a breakdown in his relationship with manager Claude Puel and club officials, according to an apparently well-sourced report.
Southampton manager Claude Puel is confident his side can take the momentum from their EFL Cup win over Liverpool into the Premier League clash at Burnley - but will again plan without captain Jose Fonte.
