Manchester United are facing a potential goalkeeping crisis on the eve of the new season with number one David de Gea being linked with Real Madrid and Victor Valdes put up for sale after manager Louis van Gaal said the former Barcelona custodian refused to play for the reserves.

Here, we look at who United could target to take the goalkeeping gloves in time for the 2015-16 campaign.

The France international has been linked with United for some time and his steely personality would appear to fit the bill for Old Trafford's grand stage. But United know from costly experience how hard Spurs chairman Daniel Levy drives a deal and a broken wrist means the 28-year-old is set to miss the start of the season.

The 28-year-old is available after being released by Sampdoria and would bring considerable international experience having won over 60 caps for Argentina. Played in the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Copa America finals and Van Gaal knows Romero from their time together at Dutch club AZ Alkmaar between 2007 and 2009.

Having profited from raiding Atletico Madrid for De Gea in 2011, United might fancy returning to the Spanish club for their new number one. The 22-year-old Slovenia international signed from Benfica for £12.6million 12 months ago and showed his potential in the Champions League against Real last season - but United would have to spend big to land him.

Another goalkeeper Van Gaal knows well from their time together in the Holland set-up and the 26-year-old Ajax goalkeeper was the United manager's first-choice at the 2014 World Cup. Commands his box well and a good shot-shopper but curiously has never saved a penalty in his senior career. Would not come cheap.

Sent on by Van Gaal as a 120th-minute substitute in Holland's 2014 World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica and became an instant penalty shoot-out hero. Spent nine years at Newcastle but has reportedly been unsettled in the past year and the 27-year-old might fancy a change from the daily dramas on Tyneside.

Having another Schmeichel between the sticks for United would definitely win the sentimental vote at Old Trafford. The son of United great Peter - a serial winner in his eight seasons at the club in the 1990s - impressed at Leicester last season but there has been upheaval since with Claudio Ranieri installed as the new manager.

Impressed enormously after joining Southampton from Celtic in 2014 and was possibly on the way to winning the Premier League's Golden Glove before breaking his kneecap in March. May not be in action again until 2016 but height - the England 'keeper is 6ft 7in - authority and presence possibly makes him a longer-term option.

Fraser Forster

The Slovenian is well-known to England fans from Euro 2016 qualifying and at 6ft 4in possesses the physical presence to be United's number one. The Inter Milan custodian, a penalty-saving specialist, is out of contract at the end of the season and United could be able to negotiate a cut-price deal for the 31-year-old.
