Chelsea have entered the race to sign Charlie Austin from QPR, according to ESPN.
The Blues have released Didier Drogba already this summer, and are keen to add another forward to their ranks.
Radamel Falcao had appeared to be the most likely signing, but Liverpool could beat Chelsea to his signature by offering him more regular first-team football.
Austin scored 18 goals for QPR last season despite his team's relegation, culminating in a call-up to the England squad.
Thus far, Austin has remained tight-lipped about his future, but it would be a huge surprise if he stayed in the Championship with QPR.
He said last week: "I feel like I’ve worked hard enough this season for QPR to try to be a Premier League player, but at the moment I’ve still got a year left at QPR.
"I’ll sit down with my family and my agent. I’ll speak to Chris Ramsey and Les Ferdinand and tell them my thoughts and they’ll tell me their thoughts.
"After these two weeks, I’ll sit down with the club, but I just want to be fully focused on these next two weeks with England.”
Newcastle, Liverpool, Tottenham and Aston Villa are also interested in signing the forward.
