Atletico Madrid president 'optimistic' club will re-sign Diego Costa from Chelsea
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has claimed he remains “optimistic” that the club will re-sign Diego Costa.
As reported by Telegraph Sport, there has been progress in negotiations aimed at reaching a compromise between Chelsea and Atletico this week.
Costa has been on strike, despite Atletico’s refusal to meet Chelsea’s valuation but there is still hope an agreement could be reached.
Spanish clubs have until midnight on Friday to sign players, just over 24 hours longer than English clubs, who cannot do any incoming deals after 11pm on Thursday.
Because of their transfer embargo, Atletico do not have to sign Costa within this window, but he would have to join the Spaniards before the deadline to be allowed to go on loan to another club until January.
Asked by Spanish reporters if Costa will sign for Atletico before the La Liga deadline, Cerezo said: “He [Costa] has a contract with another club, it’s a complicated matter.
“We are taking things with ease. As long as Chelsea do not agree to his transfer, Costa will be [a] Chelsea [player].
“Am I pessimistic or optimistic regarding the arrival of Costa? I am always optimistic.”
Everton have enquired about taking Costa on loan until January, but the 28-year-old is not thought to be interested in a temporary return to England.
Monaco and Marseille have also expressed an interest, while Las Palmas have offered Costa the chance to remain in La Liga until January.
