Arturo Vidal: Manchester United 'open talks' over £45m move for Juventus midfielder - reports
Manchester United have made a £45m offer for Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, according to reports, after the Premier League club increased their interest having agreed a deal in principle to land their top transfer target this summer.
The news comes a day after Italian newspaper La Stampa reported that the player’s agent had agreed a whopping £182,000-a-week deal with United, despite Louis van Gaal harbouring concerns that the midfielder is suffering from a knee injury.
Having gained confirmation that Vidal wants to move to Old Trafford – the reports go on to suggest that he has informed friends that he wants to leave the Italian champions – United are understood to have opened talks with Juventus officials over what is set to be a club-record transfer.
It would be the second time United have smashed their record transfer fee within eight months after the £37.1m addition of Juan Mata from Chelsea during the January transfer window, and would take United’s spending for the current window beyond the £100m mark.
Given Van Gaal’s concerns regarding the 27-year-old’s fitness, the club are looking to put Vidal through an extensive medical in order to allay their fears, especially given the risk that signing a near-£50m player would pose if he was unfit.
The claims came from Chile that suggested an initial assessment carried out by United’s medical staff have raised the issue of his previous injuries, which he suffered to the ankle and knee areas, and Van Gaal would require a full diagnosis before giving the green light for the move.
United are expected to continue their squad revamp beyond the addition of Vidal, with interest remaining in Ajax defender Daley Blind. The Netherlands international, who played under Van Gaal’s guidance at the World Cup, can play as both a centre-back and a left wing-back, and would slot into the United manager’s new 3-5-2 formation that he is installing at Old Trafford.
A move for Blind looks much more likely after it emerged that another transfer target Thomas Vermaelen is said to have agreed to join Barcelona, with a move for the Arsenal captain expected to be confirmed this week.
