Arsene Wenger insists Karim Benzema deal is 'not happening'
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted he has not made any moves to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, despite reports that the Gunners have expressed an interest in signing the French striker.
Wenger has hinted that he may not make any more major signings this summer after his deal to sign Petr Cech from Chelsea, yet Arsenal fans are hoping he adds to a forward line that appears to lack a world class marksman to compete with Europe's top teams.
Gunners striker Olivier Giroud was criticised by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry last season, with the Frenchman suggesting his old club needed to sign a top forward to transform his team into title contenders and yet Wenger seems in no rush to spend big.
"I don't know where that story has come from," he told reporters in Singapore. "But that's not happening at the moment."
Wenger also expressed his surprise at Manchester United's decision to off-load former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce, as he offered this glowing tribute to the Dutch hit-man.
"He is a loss for English football because he’s an exceptional player, one of best I’ve managed, with an exceptional technique," stated Wenger.
"I don’t know what happened why he leaves but he’s a loss to the Premier League."
